Most people dream of a job in a more glamorous setting, escaping the dreary grey skies and jetting off to a sun-drenched location.

Dubai is an exotic place, and a city where dreams can come true, offering professionals in industries such as IT a myriad of opportunities.

However, Dubai is a very different place to Europe and it’s important to understand what to expect when you arrive. Here’s a guide to what you should know about living and working in Dubai.

It’s hot

This may sound like an obvious point to make but a cool day is Dubai is considered to be 30 degrees, a temperature which in many countries would be referred to as a ‘scorcher’.

It’s hot for at least eight months of the year in this UAE city and humidity can climb to 90%. This is just one of the reasons why most people drive to work rather than walk, even if it’s relatively nearby.

However, it’s not all bad. Once you arrive and get settled, you will find that you very quickly acclimatise to the temperatures. Believe it or not, you’ll soon be able to cope with days which are 30 degrees and will start thinking like a local.

The other benefit is that air conditioning is an essential for all buildings in Dubai so if you’re inside, you’ll probably be more comfortable than you may think.

It is important though to appreciate it will be a shock to start with and allow you time to get used to working and living in a much warmer climate.

Dress code

Dubai, like the rest of UAE, has a dress code which is more restrictive and less liberal than you may be used to. This is particularly important for women. Dipping necklines or rising hems would be extremely problematic; knees and shoulders should always be covered.

Covering your head is not compulsory but it’s an excellent idea to always carry a scarf just in case you find yourself in a compromising situation which would be improved by dressing more modestly.

You can drink – but you’ll need a licence

Alcohol is one of those issues which have suffered from a lot of myths and untruths being spread about whether it’s allowed or not.

As a Muslim community, drinking alcohol is not permitted as freely as in other parts of the world, but because it’s a liberal society it’s not entirely banned either.

If you want to enjoy a tipple or two at home while you are living in Dubai, you will need to apply for a licence to buy alcohol from designated shops. It is easily obtained but you will need your employ to approve it.

Also, regardless of whether or not you obtain a licence, don’t be tempted to go out in public while intoxicated. This is a public offence which the police take extremely seriously. There’s also a zero tolerance attitude towards drink driving.

It’s a busy city

Dubai is a city which is thrusting ever forward, aiming to be at forefront of every industry. Although there’s been much development and investment already, it’s a work in progress.

This means that you’ll find construction and new projects all over the city which can mean disruption and noise in places. In addition, the mosques will send out calls to prayer five times a day, beginning at 6am.

Moving to UAE because of IT jobs in Dubai is a popular decision, but in order to have a lifestyle you enjoy you will need to think carefully about where you choose to live. Some parts of the city are much quieter than others so if this is a priority for you, pick an apartment which isn’t too close to a mosque and is away from any ongoing construction work.

Conclusion

Dubai truly is the city of opportunities and prides itself on its appetite to be the best in the world in every aspect. Living here offers the chance to earn great money tax-free, and if you know what to expect, the lifestyle is thoroughly enjoyable too.

If you work in IT, why not consider whether Dubai could offer you the career challenge that you’ve been waiting for?
