The Hawaiian island of Oahu is laden with miles of pristine, sandy beaches. Each beach has its own set of unique qualities. While some are great for riding the waves, others are ideal for water sports or just plain basking in the sun. Here is a list of 4  best beaches near Honolulu that are sure to delight the beachgoer.

Sun, Sand, and Surf at Lanikai Beach

Lanikai Beach is nestled in the sleepy beach town of Kailu on Oahu. It’s one of the island’s most famous beaches. Beachgoers flock to Lanikai Beach for its calm swimming conditions and clear-blue, snorkeling-perfect waters. Colorful reef fish and charming sea turtles are just some of the underwater attractions.

This beach is one of the best beaches for a kayak adventure. Less than a mile offshore, there are two small islands that are within easy reach via kayak. On these islands, kayakers will find bird sanctuaries for exploration. Along with calm seas and on-water adventures, Lanikai Beach also makes the best beach list for its miles of soft, white sands and great wind conditions for windsurfing and sailing.

Swimming, Sports, and Nearby Shopping at Kailua Beach Park

Kailua Beach Park has everything for the perfect beach day. With three miles of talcum-powdered sands and gentle waves, it’s picture perfect for those who want to just bask in the sun or take a cool dip. Beachgoers can also take windsurfing lessons, enjoy a game of sand volleyball, or grab a refreshing treat from the Island Snow eatery. If the sun is too much, there are picnic areas where you can cool off in the shade.

Take a break from the beach and head out to the nearby Kalapawai Market, where you find souvenirs and handmade crafts. For accommodations, there are many hotels and bed and breakfast inns close to Kailua Beach Park.

Fun at Waikiki Beach

As the most famous beach in Hawaii, Waikiki Beach is hub for tourists. Its two-mile stretch of coastline is divided into sections lined with hotels for oceanfront accommodations. Year-round, beachgoers can enjoy canoeing, stand-up paddling, surfing, and swimming. The beach is a bevy of water fun. Enjoy leisurely strolls along its long boardwalk lined with eateries and chic shops. Sunset Beach boasts sparkling blue waters, and it is a surfing mecca during the winter months. Large swells make it ideal to take photos of pro surfers who brave this natural phenomenon. During the summer months, the waters are calmer for snorkelers, swimmers and young families.
