From the blues to alternative rock to hip hop, Chicago is one of the premiere music cities in the USA. However, rather than venturing to the city for a single band you want to see, check out one of the cities celebrated music festivals. No matter what your musical taste is, you’ll find something that appeals to your aural senses.
Lollapalooza started in 1991 as a traveling music festival thanks to the efforts of Jane’s Addiction. Today, the annual festival is held at Chicago’s Grant Park, a wonderful park right in the heart of the city. A variety of superstar acts graced the state in prior years such as Rage Against the Machine, Kanye West, Radiohead, and Tool, as well as other smaller acts such as Delta Spirit and Dr. Dog. 2015’s lineup includes the legendary Paul McCartney, Metallica, Sam Smith, and Florence & the Machine. This year’s festival sold out in days, so you’ll need to scour the net to find a ticket. Once you have it, book a hotel in Chicago and have one heck of a time.
If you’re looking for something a little different, check out Riot Fest. The festival has a wide variety of acts but prides itself on a large punk rock lineup. Prior acts include NOFX, the Offspring, and Streetlight Manifesto. The headliners are also huge names such as Wu-Tang Clan, The Cure, and Weezer. For a real treat, wander off to one of the smaller stages to take in a local act, or an emerging talent. The lineup for this year hasn’t yet been announced but rest assured, it’s going to be a good one.
Chicago Jazz Festival
Despite its relative absence from popular music, jazz isn’t dead quite yet. To see and hear some of the best players in the country, head to the Chicago Jazz Festival, held annually over Labor Day Weekend. Even if you aren’t the biggest jazz fan, watching players perform difficult solos and chord progressions has a certain element to it you can’t quite put your finger on.
Taste of Chicago
Not only is the Taste of Chicago the world’s largest food festival, it also features top-notch musical acts from around the country. The headlining acts are seemingly random but appeal to several different music enthusiasts. This year’s lineup includes electro-rock outfit AWOLNATION, blues phenom Gary Clark Jr., and bluegrass legends Nickel Creek. There’s no better way to enjoy the summer in Chicago than stuffing your face full of grub and taking in some truly amazing bands.
Chicago Blues Festival
You simply can’t go to Chicago without hearing some blues, as the city has some of the best talent in the world and even has its own sub-genre of blues. This year’s festival is an homage to Chicago blues legends Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon and takes place in Grant Park, as well as in 12 bars around the city. It’s simply a must-see event.
When it comes to music in Chicago, these festivals are some of the best in the world. Whether it’s moshing to some hardcore metal or dancing to your favorite electronic dance music, make Chicago your next stop.
