Kurama no Hi-Matsuri (Kurama Fire Festival) – Kyoto

The Kurama no Hi-Matsuri Festival, also called the Kurama Fire Festival, is among the most unusual events not just in Japan, but in the entire world. The festival celebrates the arrival of the gods at Mount Kurama, where people light torches along the streets to facilitate their passage. But, as you would expect from a Japanese festival, these are not your everyday torches. Once you find your way to the festival, you will experience pine torches weighing up to a colossal 180 pounds, and measuring up to 5 meters in length. The size of the torch is proportional to the person carrying it. The fiery night is a spectacle you do not want to miss.

Chichibu Yomatsuri (Night Festival)

Colorful lanterns decorating elaborate floats; exciting flute and drum music; and spectacular firework displays that last up to two and a half hours, are just some of the reasons you want to start planning a visit to the Chichibu Yomatsuri festival, also called the Night Festival. The event is filled with locals dressed in festive outfits, and in even more festive excited moods.
