Backpacking in Europe after College

Jan, 31 || No Comments |

f you’re one of the fortunate few that can swing a backpacking trip to Europe after college graduation, you’re in for a real treat. After four years of studying, exams and perhaps a bit of partying on the side, you’re ready for your next big adventure.

With a little advance planning, you’ll enjoy a trip that will make memories lasting for a lifetime. One option to really live the local culture is to arrange a stay with a host family. You’ll be engrossed in their daily activities and get a true sense of the life, language and culture of the host family and their country. Be sure to bring a something special from your state as a hostess gift and gifts for the small children in the family.

A special selection from Disney Store is always welcome. Booking your flight and Eurail tickets well in advance will ensure the best prices and flight options. Recently, flights within Europe have become nearly as competitive as some of the train routes. If you’re able to work with an experienced travel agent, you’ll most likely save even more on your transportation costs. Travel experts recommend booking your accommodations well before departure. Often the youth hostels in the prime locations of the major cities book up quite rapidly. Consider staying on the outer edges of the European capitals for greater hostel availability and booking flexibility. You’ll also enjoy the advantage of distancing yourself from the throngs of tourists in the high season.

Check that your passport is at least six months from expiration on the date of departure. Many countries will not allow entry if the passport expiry date does not fall within this range. Make a photocopy of your passport and leave it Stateside. Also take a photo of your passport with your phone. Following these tips will ensure a smooth trip. While you’re apt to have plenty of surprises along the route, hopefully they will be positive. Stay open minded, be kind to the locals and try to absorb as much of the local culture as possible. No doubt after one trip to Europe you’ll be thinking about your return. Bon voyage!
